Notable Achievement

From March 1998 to August 1999, working as an employee of UT Austin’s Distance Education Center, I spearheaded a project to adapt an agency training curriculum, to design and implement a blended learning environment, and to write or co-write five state-mandated continuing education courses for the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement.

The 75th Legislature assigned the Commission the task of providing distance-based continuing education to all of the 80,000+ peace officers in Texas. Working for the UT Austin Distance Education Center, I created a mixed learning environment (web-based, email-based, telephony-based, and paper-based) for the first five courses initiating this project: Cultural Diversity, Family Violence, Child Abuse, Sexual Assault, and Sex Offender Characteristics. I wrote the first four of these courses and co-wrote/edited the fifth.

In 1999, the executive director of the Commission reported that the project had resulted in the participation of 79,301 peace officers and the completion of 421,524 training hours by August 1999. Overall cost savings across the state amounted to $2,396,682 by October 1999.
